Dr. M. J. Waxdal, President of FAST Systems, a Division of MPI Research, will address the Japanese Society of Toxicology at its annual meeting.

MPI Research proudly announces that Dr. M.J. Waxdal, President of FAST Systems, A Division of MPI Research, will address the Japanese Society of Toxicology, speaking on the topic of Flow Cytometry and its application in preclinical and clinical development of new drugs. ICH guidelines are pending for the requirement of immunotoxicity of new drugs. The ICH Immunotoxicology guidelines are projected for adoption within the next twelve months, and flow cytometry will play an important role in conducting these evaluations. FAST Systems and MPI Research is a leading provider of Immunotoxicology services.

Flow cytometry is commonly used to enumerate lymphoid cells, including T cells of all types, B cells and natural killer cells. These cells can be isolated from blood, bone marrow, thymus, lymph nodes and the spleen. Enumerating these cell types, determining their state of activation and measuring their ability to perform normal cellular functions has significant value in assessing the potential immunotoxicity of new drug candidates both in preclinical and clinical studies.

Dr. Waxdal is a well-known expert in the area of flow cytometry. He developed his skills during his tenure at the National Institutes of Health. Then in 1986, Dr. Waxdal founded FAST Systems in Gaithersburg, MD. For the next 17 years, Dr. Waxdal built an industry leading contract laboratory focusing on the development and application of flow cytometry in both preclinical and clinical research. In early 2003, FAST Systems was acquired by MPI Research creating a unique service provider for Immunotoxicology services with the ability to provide both the in-life and analytical components of Immunotoxicology testing.

Dr. James Laveglia, Executive Vice President and Director of Research, commented, “We are honored to have Dr. Waxdal present to the Japanese Society of Toxicology, an internationally recognized organization. Dr. Waxdal’s appearance at the JSOT conference speaks volumes to his scientific standing and recognition on the subject of flow cytometry. We are proud to have him as part of the MPI Research team.”

MPI Research exists to provide comprehensive non-clinical research that meets the requirements of pharmaceutical, medical device, animal health and chemical companies as well as governmental agencies as we partner together to bring safer, healthier products to the world. MPI Research employees specialize in a wide variety of scientific disciplines including toxicology, pharmacology, metabolism, pathology, clinical pathology, reproductive and developmental biology, veterinary science, neuroscience, experimental therapeutics, immunotoxicology, analytical chemistry, computer science, regulatory science, and statistics.
