MPI RESEARCH Unveils Joint Michigan State University/MPI Research Pathology Residency Program

MPI Research is proud to announce a pathology partnership with Michigan State University. MPI Research provides funding for a new pathology resident each year, so that after three years there will be three pathology residents in the program. The third year of the residency program will be spent at MPI Research with funding continuing until after the ACVP board examination in September. Dr. Daniel Patrick, a third-year MSU veterinary pathology resident, is the first to come to MPI Research for the final fifteen-month portion of the program.

The goal of this joint pathology residency program between MPI Research and MSU is to expand the learning process beyond the classroom/laboratory setting, and provide industry experience in toxicologic pathology. The MSU resident will learn hands-on from board certified pathologists seeing real cases of toxicological effects. The six full time board certified pathologists currently employed by MPI Research will provide direction and guidance to the residents in studying for their boards.

With the shortage of veterinary toxicologic pathologists, MPI Research hopes to help provide the veterinary pathology community with more well-trained board certified pathologists that will have hands-on experience prior to their first job.

Theodore Slone, D.V.M., DACVP, Director of Pathology at MPI Research, commented, “This program is a win-win situation both for MPI Research and the veterinary pathology community as a whole. We are very excited and happy to be able to provide the funding and training for what we hope to be a steady stream of well qualified toxicologic pathologists.”

Willie Reed, D.V.M., Ph.D., DACVP, Director of the Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health (DCPAH) and Chair of the MSU Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation, stated “Michigan State University is very pleased to enter into this new training program with MPI Research. This new program will help prepare our students for productive careers as toxicologic pathologists and address the national need to train more veterinary pathologists. MPI is to be commended for taking a major leadership role in training the next generation of veterinary pathologists."

MPI Research exists to provide comprehensive non-clinical research that meets the requirements of pharmaceutical, medical device, animal health and chemical companies as well as governmental agencies as we partner together to bring safer, healthier products to the world. MPI Research employees specialize in a wide variety of scientific disciplines including toxicology, pharmacology, metabolism, pathology, clinical pathology, reproductive and developmental biology, veterinary science, neuroscience, experimental therapeutics, immunotoxicology, analytical chemistry, computer science, regulatory science, and statistics.
